SANJEEVANI CHARITABLE TRUST

Sanjeevani means “THAT WHICH GIVES GOOD LIFE.” It stands for a Hindu legendary tree that can revive a dying person. Sanjeevani Charitable Trust was initiated in 1991 by Fr. Etukuri Raphael, a Catholic Priest, to bring life to then poverty-stricken people of the State of Telangana, India. Located in one of the driest and most backward districts of the State (Nalgonda District, Devarkonda area), the Trust has brought life to over 3,500 of the poorest families of tribals and other weaker sections, living in 60 villages and hamlets.

Sanjeevani stands for:

ACTIVITIES IN VILLAGES & HAMLETS

  1. Nine primary schools with over 700 children on rolls were started.
  2. Eight night schools for adult literacy
  3. A vocational training center for the youth (boys & girls) to teach skills in tailoring, embroidery, diesel mechanic, driving and electrician.
  4. A rural livelihoods development and training centre.
  5. Lambada craft development program
  6. Health care services by well equipped Clinic and Diagnostic Centre with qualified doctors and technicians, trained nurses and village health assistants with state-of-the-art facilities at Mallepalli, Nalgonda
  7. Kitchen gardens for every family with improved seeds and fruit tree plantation.
  8. Regular training on leadership, management, health care and needed skills for the community based volunteers and staff.
  9. Training on improved methods of agriculture and farming supported by supply of improved seeds, fertilizers and implements through cooperatives.
  10. Model farm for training and demonstration in agriculture and related trades.
  11. Thrift and Credit Cooperatives operating through over 200 associations of women and men.
  12. Income generating programs by people – goat/sheep rearing, dairy, fishing, cobbling, petty business, vegetable growing and selling, fruit wending, flour mills, autorickshaws etc.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  1. Through regular monthly fixed savings of Rs. 2 per day, over 3,500 poor people have created savings and have obtained the habit to save for their future.
  2. The money, along with contribution, stands at Rs. 1.4 Crs forming the Revolving Loan Fund of Cooperative Bank of people.
  3. Over 3,500 children were educated at their hamlets and hundreds of high school children have been supported with scholarships to pursue their education in the nearest towns.
  4. Hundreds of adults learned to read and write or at least sign.
  5. Nine hamlets were provided with primary school buildings
  6. Enrollment in schools increased by 75% for girls and 90% for boys.
  7. A well equipped and furnished Vocational Training Center was inaugurated to train youth in electrical, electronics, computers, diesel mechanical trades and sewing and embroidery with free hostel facilities for boys and girls.
  8. The newly established Clinic and Diagnostic Center with modern medical facilities and qualified staff has been rendering quality health care services for hundreds of needy rural patients on a day-to-day basis and also provides ambulance services.
  9. Free medical check-up for thousands of villages with free distribution of medicine was done through a well organized and equipped Mobile Medical Services Team.
  10. Victims of Tuberculosis and other diseases are regularly provided with free health care checkups and medical help; mothers are taught pre - and postnatal care and preventive health care.
  11. Over 1000 permanent houses were built for fire accident victims and other poor families with Govt. Assistance.
  12. Over 1500 toilets have been built with Govt. Collaboration.
  13. Educational scholarships were disbursed for about 250 students hailing from remote villages every year.
